Play That Song! — Mobile Companion for a Music Board Game

Salerow developed the mobile application for Play That Song!, a music quiz played around a real table. The app connects physical QR cards with music and keeps the game’s instructions close at hand.

Project Goal

Help the host move from a physical game card to the music needed for the next round, with a simple starting screen, QR scanning and accessible rules.

Mobile Application

A shared React Native and Expo codebase targets Android and iOS. Players choose their country and English or German, read the rules, request a random card number and open the scanner. The code includes platform-specific music flows: Spotify links on Android and an in-app audio player using SoundCloud track data on iOS. The existing API supplies card mappings and track information. Salerow’s scope in this case is the mobile application.

Inside the App

Real screens from a locally running Android demo: starting a game, reading the rules, getting a random card and adjusting preferences.

Home — start a game, choose a random card or read the rules

Random card — a number returned by the local API

Settings — language, country and music preferences

Screens show an isolated Android demo with a new local database and fictional card mappings. The random card number comes from the local API. Analytics and external music authorization are disabled. Camera recognition on physical cards, Spotify/SoundCloud playback and the iOS build were not verified in this demo.

Advantages

  • 🎵 Keep the game moving — the starting screen groups the main actions for the host.
  • 📷 Connect cards and music — QR scanning is the entry point to the card’s music flow.
  • 🎲 Add variety to a round — request a random card number from the app.
  • 📖 Check the rules at the table — instructions are available inside the application.
  • 🌍 Choose a familiar language — the app offers English and German with country preferences.

Technologies

The mobile source uses React Native 0.73, React 18, Expo SDK 50, TypeScript and Expo Router. Expo Camera supports QR scanning; Expo AV provides the in-app player. i18next handles English and German, and MMKV stores preferences. API connectivity is provided through HTTP requests. The API and administration are supporting systems; this case documents mobile application development.

Mobile development for a physical music game

Play That Song! combines a tabletop music quiz with a mobile companion. Salerow’s work covered the mobile application that helps the host use the game’s cards during a shared round.

From the table to the phone

The starting screen brings together game launch, random card selection and rules. QR scanning links the physical card to a digital music flow, while the app lets the host consult instructions without leaving the game.

One codebase, platform-specific music flows

React Native and Expo provide shared navigation and screens. The source separates the Android Spotify-link flow from the iOS in-app audio player, while HTTP requests retrieve card and track data from the existing API.

Preferences and a verifiable demonstration

English and German translations, country selection and locally stored settings support repeated use. This case distinguishes captured Android screens from integrations that still require verification with real devices and music-service accounts.
